Ride Smart: Safety Gear, Maintenance & Road Rules Every Rider Should Know

ree

Motorcycling is one of the most enjoyable ways to get around in Far North Queensland. The freedom, the fresh air, the open road — it’s hard to beat. But with that freedom comes responsibility. Riders are among the most vulnerable road users, and the best way to protect yourself is through good gear, regular bike maintenance, and knowing your road rules for motorcycles.

Gear Up Every Time You Ride

Whether you’re heading down the road for fuel or planning a weekend ride, safety gear is non-negotiable. The right clothing can make the difference between walking away from a fall and serious injury.

·         Helmet: By law, you and your pillion must wear an approved helmet (AS/NZS 1698 or ECE 22.05/22.06).

·         Jacket & Pants: Choose abrasion-resistant fabrics that cover your whole body.

·         Gloves: Protect your hands with gauntlet-style gloves with reinforced palms and knuckles.

·         Boots: Go for leather boots that cover your ankles and overlap your pants — avoid laces.

·         Visibility: Be seen with bright or reflective gear, especially at night or in bad

weather.

Even short rides need full protection.

Maintenance Made Simple

A well-maintained motorcycle doesn’t just run better — it keeps you safer. Here are a few quick checks you can build into your routine:

·         Tyres: Minimum tread depth is 2mm, but more tread means better grip. Keep them inflated to the correct pressure.

·         Brakes: Test both before every ride. They should stop the bike instantly when applied.

·         Controls: Make sure throttle, clutch, and levers move smoothly.

·         Chain & Sprockets: Keep the chain tensioned and lubricated. Replace worn sprockets.

·         Lights & Mirrors: Check indicators, brake lights, and adjust mirrors for clear visibility.

Even a 5-minute pre-ride check can prevent problems on the road.

Know the Road Rules

Motorcycle riders must follow the same road rules as all other drivers, but there are also specific laws for motorcyclists and pillion passengers in Queensland. These cover areas such as:

·         Lane filtering rules.

·         Pillion passenger restrictions for learner riders.

·         Protective gear requirements, including approved helmets.

·         Licence conditions for learners (RE), provisionals and open (R) riders.

Staying up to date with the rules isn’t just about avoiding fines — it helps you ride with confidence and predictability, keeping you and others safer on the road.

Ride to Survive

At the end of the day, riding is about enjoyment. But it’s also about survival. With the right gear, a well-looked-after bike, and solid knowledge of the road rules, you’ll be better prepared for whatever the road throws at you.
