Get Ready Cairns
Colour Your Emergency Kit Competition

Freshwater Small Engines is running a community colouring competition to help raise awareness ahead of the upcoming cyclone and storm season. In Far North Queensland, cyclone season runs from 1 November to 30 April, and now is the time to start conversations at home.

The competition is primarily aimed at children up to 12 years old, but entries from all ages are welcome.

Kids often lead the way in getting families thinking and talking — and this competition is designed to make preparedness fun, practical, and family-focused.

WHY WE’RE DOING THIS

This initiative encourages Cairns families to think and talk about disaster preparedness before the wet season arrives. The goal is to build awareness, spark conversations at home, and provide access to practical information that helps protect our community.

Who Created This?

The competition was created by Sharni Day, a qualified Disaster Resilience Officer and Earth Scientist with years of experience in disaster management, community preparedness, disaster education, and resilience planning in Far North Queensland.

Sharni has worked directly with local communities throughout Far North QLD for the past 10 years to improve safety and readiness during cyclone season and time of natural disasters; and now applies that knowledge to support the region in practical, community-focused ways.

While free disaster readiness information is offered, participants should always refer to official government and emergency service sources for current instructions and advice.
